If you ask me what type of meat I prefer on my salad, in my tacos or between two pieces of bread, I'll tell you chicken. But I wasn't even thinking about that in my uncle's backyard on a Sunday in December. 

He introduced us to his four chickens housed together in a little coop. At least once a day, they provide small, smooth, off-white eggs that make for fresh scrambled eggs. My uncles said chickens are fairly easy to care for, only requiring feed and a little bit of care. The night before he had brought them into the house when Solvang, California was under a freeze advisory. 

At his house, we enjoyed a buffet-style brunch of smoked salmon, cinnamon coffee cake, brie, pancakes, samosas and chutney, hard boiled and scrambled eggs, gingerbread and Panettone. Yes, I indulged in all.
